God Is Powerful. So Why Are We Still Stuck?

Sometimes the resistance is us.

The thing about studying science is that, eventually, you start to see it everywhere. If you are so-called left-brained, it gives you language for concepts. Simple or complex. Related or seemingly unrelated to the field itself. Easter is one of my favourite holidays. Second only to Christmas. Every year, it reminds me just how powerful God is. And in this season of transition, from employment to entrepreneurship, I have found myself reflecting on something: If God is so powerful, why are some of us, especially those of us who claim faith, not as effective as we could be in our lives and leadership? And by effective, I do not mean the flashy stuff. Not the titles, awards, or LinkedIn announcements. I mean the real, everyday stuff. Shouldn’t we be leading the most productive, healthy, balanced, caring, and cared-for teams in the spaces we influence? And if this is you, bravo. But if we are honest, many of us know that more often than not, we still give in to the politics. We still play the game. We still participate in cultures that create fear, ego, and emotional unsafety. Then we use faith mostly as a coping mechanism. The Sunday sermon becomes our weekly top-up. The Bible app devotion becomes our next WhatsApp status. But little actually changes. I’m touching a nerve, aren’t I? Because if we serve a God who conquered the cross, and if His power lives in us, then what is the missing piece? Enter Ohm’s Law. Ohm’s Law states that the flow of electrical charge, called current, is directly related to the power source, called voltage, and inversely related to the resistance in the system. Put simply: power may be present, but resistance affects flow. And maybe that is the point. If current is the flow of good leadership, and voltage is God as the source, then perhaps it is resistance that explains the gap between what is available to us and what actually flows through us. We often think of resistance as external. And to be fair, that is understandable. The world is always at war with something. Inflation rises. Pressure rises. Expectations at work, at home, and everywhere else rise along with it. But Ohm’s Law is about flow through a substance. And that substance is you. You are the substance. Easter proves that God can overcome the worst external realities. But He still requires a yielded vessel. A substance of low resistance. Reducing resistance looks like surrender, obedience and faith. This is the essence of The Divine Edge: It is the belief that total dependence on God in leadership, despite our qualifications, degrees, titles, and experience, is what ultimately positions us to lead well and live well. Despite the politics. The pressure. The unfavourable conditions. The external Goliaths. It is listening for God’s guidance in the middle of an ordinary workday. How to respond to that email. How to have that difficult conversation. How to manage with kindness when others do not deserve it. It is carrying light when you are also surrounded by darkness. It is doing the right thing when no one is watching. Caring for people whose intentions may not be pure. Choosing integrity, not because it is strategic, but because it is obedient. And perhaps that is the uncomfortable truth of all this: We may not be able to change every environment immediately. But we can change what flows through us. And that changes more than we think. So as you begin this work week, maybe the prayer is not simply, “God, give me more power.” Maybe it is: “Lord, reduce my resistance.” Because when the source is already sufficient, the real question is not whether God can move. It is whether He can move freely through you.
